Moss Spherical Tank
at Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation
Arctic Princess
The Moss spherical LNG tank is unmatched in reliability and flexibility for transporting LNG at sea. Its robust structure allows the tank to accept any filling level, with no concerns for sloshing problems. The robust and simple configuration of the spherical tank structure is a guarantee for problem free operation, and the system has never experienced any leaks or defects, unlike the main competing system.
Engineered with a unique support system, the spherical tank is an un-stiffened structure. This means it is simple and fabrication-friendly. The tank’s reliability makes it unnecessary to install a costly, complete secondary barrier. The tank is insulated on the outside, meaning that boil-off rates are easily adjusted according to project requirements.
Since the tank’s introduction in 1973, more than 100 LNG carriers have been constructed at shipyards in Asia, Europe and the USA. Designs have the flexibility to accommodate the client’s needs, with cargo volumes ranging up to 265,000 m3. Propulsion systems include steam turbine, dual fuel diesel-electric propulsion and slow-speed diesel engines.
